MADISON, Wis. — Health officials on Saturday confirmed they are investigating the second measles case in Dane County and the fourth in Wisconsin after an out-of-state traveler stayed at a Madison hotel earlier this month.

Public Health Madison and Dane County says the person stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at 5150 High Crossing Blvd on Feb. 6 from 12:01 a.m. to noon.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread from person to person through the air and can remain airborne for up to two hours after a sick person coughs or sneezes. It is very contagious that if one person contracts it, up to 90% of the people around them may also become infected if they are not vaccinated.

Symptoms of measles typically appear approximately seven to 21 days after exposure and include:

Runny nose

High fever (may be greater than 104°F)

Tiredness

Cough

Individuals exposed on Feb. 6 may begin to develop symptoms from Friday through Feb. 27. PHMDC advises those who were exposed but are unvaccinated and unprotected, including anyone born in or after 1957, to quarantine from Friday until Feb. 27.

Anyone exposed to measles should call their doctor’s office or clinic before visiting, so precautions can be taken to prevent exposing other patients to the virus. Please reach out to PHMDC at health@publichealthmdc.com or call (608) 266-4821 with questions about a possible exposure.

This case is unrelated to a previous case involving a UW-Madison student, according to officials. Following that incident, students at the university are required to provide proof of their vaccinations, including the MMR vaccine. A measles case was reported in Milwaukee County from a person on a returning flight from Phoenix. The first confirmed case in Wisconsin in 2026 was reported in a Waukesha County resident.

Public Health offers free vaccines to uninsured adults and children, and children with medical assistance.
