FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou baseball used a record-setting performance from its offense in Sunday’s series finale to earn a dominant 34-3 victory over Mount St. Mary’s. With the win, Mizzou grabbed the opening series two games to one.
Missouri’s 34 runs were its second most in a single game in program history and the most since a 35-run outing in 1902. As a team, the Tigers had a program-best 32 RBI, passing the previous record of 28 against Texas on April 19, 2008. In addition, the Tigers’ 26 hits matched a program record that had been done just twice (2005 vs. Navy; 2008 vs. Texas).
A trio of home runs for MU led the offensive attack, graduate Jase Woita clubbed the first long ball of the season and later junior Sam Parker and sophomore Chris Patterson went back-to-back in the eighth inning. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Macon went 6-for-6 and drew a pair of walks to become the third Tiger to log six hits in a single game and was on base all eight times. Macon and Woita each drove in a team-leading eight RBI – one shy of the school-record nine, which had been done only twice.
Left-handed pitcher Brady Kehlenbrink opened with a 1-2-3 first inning before Mount St. Mary’s used a home run to grab a 3-0 advantage in the second. Kehlenbrink settled in, allowing just one baserunner outside of the second inning across five innings of work, fanning six batters to match his career best.
The Tigers offense quickly came to life in the bottom of the second as a five-run rally started with a bases loaded RBI single from Macon that scored Jamal George, followed by a 408 foot, 3-run bomb off the bat of Woita that brought Goldbeck and Macon in to score, giving the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
An inning later, MU plated 13 more runs while sending 18 batters to the plate. Cameron Benson got the inning started with a double down the right field line, followed by an single from Patterson which scored Benson, extending the lead to three. Isaiah Frost stayed hot with a double to right field that scored Patterson and George. Macon had a massive inning with a double and a single that brought three Tigers in to score. Frost eventually came back to the plate, hitting a single to right field that brought Benson and Patterson in to score yet again, giving the Tigers an 18-3 lead after three.
Mizzou added five more runs in the fourth, utilizing three hits, three hit batters and a walk. Macon continued his strong day, with an RBI single to the left side of the infield that brought George home. Woita and Pierre Seals followed that up with singles of their own, bringing Peyton Basler, Goldbeck and Macon into score, making it a 23-3 ballgame.
After posting a pair in the seventh, the Tigers made the gap even larger in the eighth using four extra-base hits to drive in seven more runs. Eric Maisonet drove in a run with a triple before Macon followed with his second double of the day. Missouri capped its scoring with Parker and Patterson’s back-to-back home runs, a three-run shot off the bat of Parker, followed by a solo homer from Patterson.
Mizzou used four relievers to close the game as LHP Dane Bjorn took the sixth, allowing zero runs on just one hit with one strikeout. From there, true freshmen Keagen Kohlhoff, Eli Skidmore and Luke Sullivan each made their Tiger debuts and allowed no hits and just one baserunner, striking out three as Missouri closed out a 34-3 victory.
