PORT JERVIS – A fatal shooting claimed the life of a 43-year-old Port Jervis man just after midnight Sunday and by that evening, city police had the suspect, David Rombousek, in custody.

The 26-year-old Port Jervis man was arrested at 7:35 p.m. without incident on Ball Street in the city’s Fourth Ward.

He was wanted for the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old Port Jervis man who was found suffering from several gunshot wounds just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Hammond Street. His name was not released as of Sunday night.

Police and other law enforcement partners are actively investigating the fatal shooting that occurred on Hammond Street in the western Orange County city at approximately 12:32 a.m.

Chief William Worden told Mid-Hudson News that several civilians were rendering aid to the man as police arrived on scene.  Worden said he was unconscious at that point, but police took over lifesaving aid and continued until Port Jervis Ambulance arrived and transported him to Bon Secours Hospital for emergency treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The chief said the incident appears to have been isolated with no threat to the public.

“At this time, the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no active threat to public safety,” Worden said.

Members of the State Police assisted City of Port Jervis Police officers at the scene. The investigation was conducted by the Port Jervis Police Department, along with troopers, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, with support from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.
