There are a few movies that are mandatory watches for horror fans, like Nosferatu, Frankenstein, The Exorcist, Psycho, and more. They are not only the gold standard for horrifying people via celluloid, but also are absolute hard-hitters that shaped nightmares for generations. While there are enough modern horror movies for fans to enjoy, the charm of these classics never gets old. Among them is the Tobe Hooper-directed Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which redefined the genre.
Started as an indie project, the movie initially struggled to find distribution, but once it hit theaters, there was no looking back. It emerged as the juggernaut that influenced the genre and a generation of filmmakers. The 85% Rotten Tomatoes-rated movie brought forth the ideas of a final girl, the use of power tools as murder weapons, and made Leatherface a household name and a horror icon for ages. Fans who’d love to revisit the classic have a few days left to do so as Texas Chain Saw Massacre will leave Netflix this February, as per ComicBook.
Co-written by Hooper with Kim Henkel, Texas Chain Saw Massacre follows a group of young adults who encounter a house full of demented butchers who chase them with chainsaws (and other foul weapons). The movie’s success was followed by a couple of sequels, with the last movie debuting on Netflix in 2022, which circles back to the original story; however, none proved as influential as the original movie. Made on a meager budget of $140,000 million, it earned $30.9 million at the box office, making it a commercial and critical success.
Is There a New ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Film with Glen Powell?
Given Hollywood likes to rehash the ideas that worked well in the past with prequels and sequels, there has been a long-standing rumor about a new Texas Chain Saw Massacre movie hailing from A24 with Strange Darling filmmaker, JT Mollner, and starring fan favorite leading man Glen Powell. However, Mollner put a stop to those rumors by previously revealing, “Glen [Powell] is a tremendous actor and one of the first real movie stars to come along in a long time. I was lucky enough somebody exposed him to Strange Darling and we got to take a meeting and he was really excited about it. And I was excited about his work. And so I do know him and I met him, and it was a really cool meeting, and I’d love to do something with him at some point. But those rumors about TCM were strange. I didn’t know quite where they came from.”
Texas Chain Saw Massacre will leave Netflix on February 18.
