South Carolina gas prices dip; Lowcountry prices mostly higher than state average

  • February 16, 2026

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — South Carolinians are faring better than the majority of the United States when it comes to gas prices as experts continue to watch for a spring upswing.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the state fell 3 cents in the past week to $2.55.

Those prices are 4.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 21.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

The lowest price for gas in South Carolina was $2.22 per gallon over the weekend, while the most expensive was $3.49 per gallon.

The approximate county-by-county averages varied Monday morning across the Lowcountry: Beaufort County had an average per-gallon price of $2.67, Berkeley County sat at $2.56, Charleston County was at $2.67, Colleton County was at $2.56, Dorchester County was at $2.54, Georgetown County was at $2.72, Orangeburg County was at $2.44 and Williamsburg County was at $2.56. That makes the average gas price within the Lowcountry about $2.59 per gallon.

The lowest gas price in the Lowcountry depended on payment method; those paying with cash could buy gas for $2.31 per gallon at the Circle K at 8410 Dorchester Road in North Charleston. Those paying in other ways could snag a price of $2.37 per gallon at either the Sam’s Club at 2900 Centre Pointe Drive in North Charleston or the Money Saver at 1804 Highmarket Street in Georgetown.

“The national average price of gasoline continues to grind higher, and while the pace of increases remains modest for now, upward momentum could accelerate in the coming weeks as refinery maintenance intensifies and the broader transition to summer gasoline begins,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“However, supply-side dynamics could temper that seasonal pressure. If OPEC+ proceeds with resuming production increases following its first-quarter pause, additional barrels could cap crude oil’s upside and limit the magnitude of the spring rally at the pump,” De Haan said. “That said, geopolitical tensions—particularly between the U.S. and Iran—remain an unpredictable variable, injecting risk into the outlook and leaving prices vulnerable to sudden shifts.”

The national average price of a gallon of gas was still lower than $3 but had risen by 2.6 cents in the past week, sitting at $2.87 as of Monday. That is up by 4.9 cents per gallon from a month ago and down by 23.5 cents per gallon from a year ago.

As for diesel costs, there was little change, with the average national price increasing by one cent over the last week. It currently stands at $3.624 per gallon.
