The United States (5-0) crushed 17th-ranked Italy, 6-0, in a chippy quarterfinal on Feb. 13. It was the latest blowout in a path of destruction from the Stars and Stripes.
The Americans have outscored their five opponents 26-1 in the tournament, including a 5-0 thrashing of rival Canada. It’s been an epic revenge tour since the Canadians upended the U.S. in the 2022 Beijing Games gold medal game.
The Americans’ neutral zone speed and depth have proven to be the difference. No team has been able to match their output. The United States has scored five or more goals in every game this tournament.
Defenseman Caroline Harvey has been simply sensational. She has nine points, the most of all women in the tournament. It’s also the most ever by a United States woman defenseman.
Alex Carpenter has six points and has proven to be a force in the Olympic setting.
U.S. captain Hilary Knight remains on the cusp of history. Knight is currently tied for the most career Olympic goals and points for a U.S. women’s hockey player.
In the Olympic opener, Cleveland Heights’ own Laila Edwards became the first Black woman to play for Team USA at the Winter Olympics. There are eight competitors from Ohio competing in Milano Cortina.

The Americans have not allowed a goal in the last four games. Goalies Aerin Frankel and Gwyneth Philips have been nearly untouchable between the pipes.
The United States is 4-1 all-time against Sweden in the Olympics. Sweden’s only victory came in 2006, which was also played in Italy.

Sweden (5-0) is the Cinderella of the tournament, tallying four wins in Group B and powering in a plus-18 goal differential overall. But can the Swedes hang with an ice hockey behemoth on the penultimate stage?
They knocked off third-ranked Czechia, 2-0, in the quarterfinals, setting up their showdown with the United States. Sweden will want to live in the counter game, slowing the Americans as best they can before pulling their own punch on the other side of the ice.
Hanna Olsson is the key cog for Sweden. The gamechanger has shown out in pressure moments during the tournament.
The blue line has also held its own to secure the leads. Sweden’s defense has not allowed more than two goals in any game this tournament.
Sweden’s Olympic path has been suspect, dodging most top-five countries in the tournament. They will more than make up for it by squaring off against the top-ranked team in the world.
The two teams last met at the semifinals of the Sochi Winter Olympics, with the Americans running roughshod on the ice for a 6-1 victory.
