Trail-cam footage from Minnesota shows a wolf dropping two fish in the forest before rushing out of frame, presumably to continue fishing.
The footage, featured Monday by Voyageurs Wolf Project, was captured last spring near a creek that a wolf pack is known to utilize as a prey source.
The footage also shows a black bear entering the frame to sniff a potential meal, but ultimately leaving the fish for another wolf to pick up more than two days later.
Wolves catching fish in boreal forests is rarely documented behavior, made possible by remote, motion-sensor trail cameras. The footage is posted below or available via this link.
An observation from Voyageurs Wolf Project regarding the bear:
“Surprisingly, the black bear seemed very perplexed at finding this fish, and just left it alone without even taking a little nibble. We would have expected a bear to readily take a free meal like this but apparently not.”
