A very shallow magnitude 2.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Odessa, Ector County, Texas, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026, at 1:46 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.5 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.4.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Odessa (pop. 114,400) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and West Odessa (pop. 22,700) 7 miles away. In Gardendale (pop. 1,600, 9 miles away), Midland (pop. 132,500, 20 miles away), Andrews (pop. 13,800, 31 miles away), Crane (pop. 3,900, 35 miles away), and Monahans (pop. 7,700, 36 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
