Winter Storm Warning Thursday PM due to heavy snow, Rusty says
A First Alert 6 Weather Day is in place Thursday due to heavy snow, strong wind and slick roads that will impact the Omaha metro.
Senior Chief Meteorologist Rusty Lord says significant shifts south in model data in the last 12-18 hours have lead to a much snowier forecast.
“Snow chances start to pick up after 1pm and snow rates could be 1-2″ per hour under the heaviest snow showers the later we go into the afternoon and early evening,” Rusty says.
Rusty says 3-7″ of snow is now likely in the metro and along the I-80 corridor. Drivers can expect worse and worse travel across the area during the commute into the evening hours.
Omaha metro school districts cancel Thursday classes due to weather
School districts in the Omaha area have canceled class for Thursday ahead of the snow chances and cold temps.
Bellevue Public Schools and Elkhorn Public Schools were some of the first districts to call out.
Early Thursday morning, Papillion-La Vista Community Schools, Gretna Public Schools, and Ralston Public Schools called classes off.
Other districts followed suit shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday: Millard Public Schools, Omaha Public Schools, Bennington Public Schools, and Westside Community Schools.
Fremont Public Schools and Scribner-Snyder Community Schools later announced they were closing.
2 injured in crash on Dodge Street with motorcycle, SUV
Two people were injured in a crash on Dodge Street near 68th Street on Wednesday night.
Omaha Police reported that around 6:34 p.m. Wednesday the accident occurred involving a person on a motorcycle.
Police said a motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Dodge when an SUV going east tried to turn into the church parking lot.
The motorcyclist struck the SUV on the side. A passenger in the car and the motorcyclist were taken to the hospital.
The motorcycle was speeding, according to OPD.
1 injured, 1 arrested after South Omaha shooting
An 18-year-old is injured and a man is in jail after a shooting in South Omaha early Wednesday.
Officers arrested 22-year-old Daniel Navarro in connection to the shooting, according to an updated release.
Emergency crews were called to the shooting near 13th Street and Missouri Avenue shortly before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Navarro was taken into Douglas County Corrections on charges of first-degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, possession of a gun by a prohibited person, and assault causing bodily injury, the release states.
The shooting is under investigation.
No indictment for Bellevue officers in death of man in custody
A grand jury found no reason to indict Bellevue officers involved in an incident with a man last summer.
According to police reports, a homeowner called police after finding a drunken man in their pool, telling 911 dispatchers that he then tried to enter the home.
Police said they found the suspect, later identified as Justin Lieffers, 43, of Bellevue, and that he tried to flee from officers. He was caught, but resisted arrest and had to be subdued, according to officer reports.
After being handcuffed, Lieffers became unresponsive and stopped breathing, according to BPD. Officers performed lifesaving measures until EMTs arrived at the scene.
He was then taken to Nebraska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Husker FB Spring Game tickets go on sale Thursday
Tickets for Nebraska Football’s Spring Football Game will go on sale Thursday at noon.
Tickets will be general admission beginning with the East and West Stadium lower seating areas. Donors will receive the first opportunity to purchase East Balcony club tickets on Thursday at 9 a.m.
General admission tickets will be $5 from Thursday through March 22, before ticket prices increase to $10 from March 23 to 27.
The game will be played on Saturday, March 28, with kickoff set for 11 a.m.
