The iPhone Air is Apple’s first to ship with the company’s new and improved C1X 5G modem, ensuring better performance, reliability, and efficiency than Qualcomm’s X75 running in the previous-generation iPhone 16 lineup, but the first crack in the technology giant’s in-house baseband solutions may have appeared. An owner of the company’s sleek flagship found out one morning that the device had no cellular reception, and when he dove into the network settings, he found that the C1X had suffered a hardware failure. This incident is highly interesting, and we can imagine that Apple will be curious about what caused the problem.

Apple will likely be interested in diagnosing the C1X, as it is quite rare for a baseband chip to suffer from a hardware malfunction

The C1X’s hardware failure was reported by Reddit user ‘itstheskylion,’ who claims that the iPhone Air had a protective case strapped on since the day he purchased it, and there was no physical damage. As you can see in the images below, the Mobile Service Diagnostics revealed an issue that was disrupting the iPhone Air’s cellular performance, and given that the iPhone Air was experiencing zero cellular, it probably means that the C1X modem is toast.

While it won’t be difficult for itstheskylion to receive a replacement unit from Apple, assuming it was under warranty, it will be interesting to see what the company’s next step will be. Given that 5G modem failures are extremely rare, this incident could just be an isolated one, since there is a margin for error on smartphone shipments that are produced in the millions.

In the discussion in the Reddit thread, one individual has responded that the company will be curious to read the iPhone Air’s logs, allowing it to reach a conclusion on how the hardware failure occurred. A few iPhone 17 owners have also reported problems with cellular reception, but one of them said that he had to toggle Airplane Mode for the issue to be resolved. Also, remember that the iPhone 17 is equipped with a Qualcomm modem, not Apple’s C1X.

We guess that if the iPhone Air owner knows his way around the smartphone’s settings, he would also have known to perform some ‘trial and error’ checks to bring back the C1X. Apple’s engineers will definitely want to examine this problem because, as far as we know, it is the first time this has happened with its in-house 5G modems, so they will want to get to the bottom of it before the iPhone 18 launch happens in a few months.
