That was a day for hockey. After a somewhat ho-hum Round Robin round to the 2026 Winter Olympic hockey tournament, the underdogs came to play, and the big dogs had to sweat out overtime wins. Of course, we’ve got the Sidney Crosby update, and one on Filip Hallander, too. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Montreal Canadiens could be offering up defensemen on the NHL trade market, and it seems the St. Louis Blues are asking way too much for their assets, and rival general managers are walking away.
What a day of hockey.
My perpetual desire for the underdogs to win meant I found myself rooting for Czechia and Sweden. I’m not sure if that makes me an anarchist or just a jerk. But I also imagined the tears of NBC executives realizing a gold medal game would not include either the US or Canada, and that thought made me giggle.
Hey, you’ve known for a long time that I’m not right.
Pittsburgh Penguins
It was a news day as we delayed our column content. You know Sidney Crosby was injured, but Shelly Anderson jumped on the early morning Crosby injury update.
If the NHL players go back in 2030, I’ll make a wager now that fighting is allowed. The way Czechia went after Crosby was the very thing fighting is meant to prevent.
Lost in the cloud of Crosby news, the Penguins might be getting a forward back in the mix. They assigned Filip Hallander to Wilkes-Barre on a conditioning assignment.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
NHLtraderumors.me: I can’t find the source material, so I’ll have to link to the aggregation, but Frank Seravalli reports that the St. Louis Blues are setting exorbitantly high prices on their assets, Brayden Schenn, Justin Faulk, and maybe even Jordan Kyrou, and rival GMs are turned off.
RG.org: Jimmy Murphy reports the Boston Bruins are interested in Justin Faulk, but perhaps in tandem with Seravalli’s report regarding the Blues setting high prices on the NHL trade market, Murphy reports St. Louis wants a package similar to that of Rasmus Andersson, a first, a prospect, and a player.
The Athletic ($): It sounds like a scene from an 1980s movie. With Team Canada in a battle for their tournament, and despite being felled with a leg injury, Sidney Patrick Crosby gave the boys a speech to rally the troops before the third.
Vegas Hockey Now: Mitch Marner’s goal was a beaut. Big game Mitch.
Sportsnet: I looked for NBC’s coverage of the Team USA win, but it’s absolutely pathetic. The rights holder, who has been tasked with growing the game, has not only embargoed highlights but also barely has any coverage. Nice. Anyhoo, Luke Fox has the dramatic Quinn Hughes’ OT winner.
Philly Hockey Now: The mailbag 2.0. Rick Tocchet’s situation isn’t as comfortable as you’d expect. Prospect ETA’s and the 2026 NHL Draft. Will James delivers the hefty Flyers analysis.
