SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Mets will not rebrand until the 2028 season.

The team announced on its social media on Thursday that it “messed up” and ran into a trademark issue regarding the new name.

In a video released by the team on Thursday, General Manager Jason Smorol pretends like he is going to reveal the new name by holding a hoodie backwards and flipping it to show the rebrand. However, as he’s turning the hoodie around, the video freezes.

“The Syracuse Mets messed up. We ran into trademark issues. The good news is we are going to be the Syracuse Mets for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Back to the drawing board for the 2028 season,” a voice in the frozen video said. The same message is written as text on the screen.

The chosen name was not revealed.

Just one day earlier, Smorol told the Why am I a Mets Fan Podcast that an announcement regarding the name change will be made sometime this week.

“This week, there is a major announcement. It’s like a major award, but it’s not an award,” said Smorol. He continued, “I just say things. A lot of verbal asterisks in my speech.”

The podcast asked Smorol if the announcement pertained to the team’s name. He said, “Yes.”

“A soft major announcement,” he added.

A link to that specific part of the interview with Smorol on the Why Am I a Mets Fan podcast is included here.

The Syracuse Mets announced in August 2025 that 2026 would be the last season the team plays under that name. At the time, the team said a rebrand would go into effect in 2027.
