Doomsday is coming — not just to theaters, but for New Jersey.

Avengers: Doomsday,” the highly anticipated Marvel Studios film, will be released in December. Legendary actor Ian McKellen said in a recent interview on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” that when he returns as Magneto in the film, he’s taking aim at the Garden State.

“Now, I don’t always understand the story of these movies that I’m in,” McKellen said. “But in this one, I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by saying that Magneto destroys New Jersey. I’m sorry about that New Jersey, my fault.”

Marvel Studios is infamously tight-lipped about plot details, so it would be quite shocking if McKellen was serious about the Garden State’s destruction. But it wouldn’t be the first time an actor has spoiled a major MCU plot point.

McKellen, who has played everyone from King Richard III in “Richard III” to Gandalf in the “Lord of the Rings” films, is also beloved for his portrayal of Magneto, the metal-controlling anti-hero of “X-Men” lore. He first played the character in 2000’s “X-Men,” before appearing in three sequels — most recently in 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” He is reviving the role comes as part of Disney’s highly anticipated re-introduction of the X-Men in the MCU.

Little is known about the plot of “Doomsday,” the first “Avengers” movie since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” made more than $2.8 billion and capped off a prolific era of filmmaking for Marvel Studios — and featured key scenes set in New Jersey. But the return of the X-Men, the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, Chris Evans’ Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor have all been teased in trailers. Robert Downey Jr., whose iconic performance as Iron Man helped launch the MCU, is returning to the franchise… playing the villainous Dr. Doom.

A long-haired McKellen was seen alongside Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier (Professor X) in one of the teasers for the film.

“Death comes for us all, that’s all I know for sure,” McKellen says in the trailer. “The question isn’t are you prepared to die, the question is who will you be when you close your eyes?”
