Following a public Valentine’s Day breakup with his former pal Donald Trump, Bill Maher has shared his reaction to the president’s recent rant.
On Friday’s episode of Real Time, the comedian joked he knows “how women feel now” after a guy buys them dinner and expects them to “put out,” after Trump referred to their March 2025 dinner as “a total waste of time.”
“I woke up Saturday morning to a blistering social media text from him, it went on and on—Valentine’s Day, by the way,” he recounted. “He was very mad at me because I didn’t get his joke about how China is gonna make Canada give up hockey… I didn’t. I think we’re gonna have to workshop that one for a while.”
Maher continued, “So, he went off on me and said, ‘The dinner we had was a waste of time!’—well, I didn’t think it was—and that I’m a jerk, and that I’m a lightweight, and all this sh*t. Because I never stopped criticizing him. I never said I would. I know how women feel now, a guy buys you dinner and expects you to put out. I’m not that guy.
Noting that Trump “of course” accused him of having the made-up “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Maher plans to disprove the diagnosis at end of his next show.
“It’s so funny, because I got so much shit from the left for reporting honestly that in person, he was very different, very nice, very gracious. And then he says, ‘No, you were scared.’ I’m like the Democrats with an election, I just can’t win,” joked Maher.
After Maher explained last April on his show that he had dinner at the White House with Trump and mutual friend Kid Rock because it was “better than hurling insults from 3,000 miles away,” Trump declared last weekend “it was a total waste of time for me to have this jerk at the White House.”
