The Marion Indiana Fire Department said “B-Shift” firefighters responded to a report of a large-scale fire around 6 a.m. Feb. 21 at the Marion VA Medical Center.
MARION, Ind. — Crews are currently investigating a fire at the Marion VA Medical Center campus Saturday morning.Â
In a post on Facebook, the Marion Indiana Fire Department said “B-Shift” firefighters responded to a report of a large-scale fire around 6:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at the Marion VA Medical Center, located on East 38th Street, where crews said they “quickly” initiated fire attack operations.Â
According to Scott Leas, a public affairs officer with the VA, the fire was in engineering buildings 51, 52 and 53.
The Marion FD said they worked to “contain fire extension and protect critical infrastructure.”Â
Crews told 13News no injuries were reported and there was no impact to patient care.Â

“Due to fire suppression efforts, there may be a temporary loss of water supply to the main campus,” Leas said. “In anticipation of the loss, bottled water and handwashing stations have been deployed across all remaining Marion campus areas. Currently there is not a safety impact to patient healthcare.”
Marion Chief Curtis Garr said the building the fire started in was undergoing renovations and the sprinkler system had been shut off.
The fire is ongoing, and crews are still working to put it out.Â
“We’re just doing our best, doing what we can, everybody is doing a good job, everybody is working together and communication is good here between the different agencies and we’re just doing what we do,” Garr said.Â
Other assisting agencies include the Grant County EMS, Gas City Fire, Center Township. Washington Township, Mill Township and Swayzee Fire.Â
In total, Garr said about 50 firefighters responded to the fire.Â
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.Â
Marion is approximately 85 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis.Â
