Four Cañon City Tigers were crowned champions Saturday night at Ball Arena in Denver during the state wrestling tournament.

Most impressive was returning champion Kate Doughty, a senior, who completed a perfect season by pinning Samaya Carreon of Arvada in the 135-pound division.

Joining Doughty as a champion for the girls’ team was Piper Montoya, a senior, who only lost two matches this season. She defeated Madison McElmeel of Severance to take the top crown at state.

For the Tigers’ boys, senior Ben Reish also took home a championship after defeating Cooper Hern of Eagle Valley on Saturday night in the 285 division.

Also completing an impressive state run was senior Elias Koonce, who only lost one match this season and defeated Elijah Contreras of Pueblo East by a decision of 14-11 to take home top honors at the state tournament.

Asher Montoya – 106 pounds – 6th

Dominic Lippis – 138 pounds – 4th

Eleanor Thorson – 130 pounds – 3rd

Vivienne Combee – 170 pounds – 4th

For Florence Junior/Senior High School, Alyee Johnson placed fifth for the girls’ team.
