The first chapter of Dunk and Egg is behind us. But there are still more tales to be told in HBO’s television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s series of novellas.
Following the first season finale on Feb. 22, executive producer-showrunner Ira Parker announced on the Seven Kingdoms after-show that future episodes will “deal with the repercussions” of Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell) ignoring the wishes of his father, Prince Maekar “The Anvil” Targaryen (Sam Spruell), and officially becoming the squire for Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey).

Parker confirmed that it was Dunk’s conversation with Prince Daeron “The Drunken” Targaryen (Henry Ashton) that made him realize Egg’s life wouldn’t be fulfilled growing up as a Targaryen prince. “When [Maekar’s] sons are trained at Summerhall, they turn out like little sh-ts,” the producer said. “Maekar, very reasonably, says no [to Dunk], because he can’t stand his son, a prince, sleeping under a tree with a hedge knight. And also, he doesn’t want to turn his last chance to have an honorable son over to somebody else.”

Ansell explained about Egg’s disobedience at the end of Season 1: “He does it because he really, really wants to be with Dunk. He starts as a sad prince who never liked his family. Because of Dunk, he learns more about the small folk and the world, and he ends up to be this happy squire who has someone he can trust.”
Claffey said about his character barely surviving his violent trial by seven: “He’s half-dead, and I’m pretty sure he wishes he was dead. He can’t fathom how he’s alive and so many brave, great people died for him.” As for Season 2, Claffey is taking a “wait and see” approach regarding “what happens” next.
Director Sarah Adina Smith teased that the second season will feature “our unlikely duo back on the road and off to new adventures.” The sixth episode ended with Dunk “nailing a penny into the tree in Ser Arlan’s honor,” but it’s also a reminder to himself of “what honor really means, and what he’ll take forward with him, wherever the road may lead.”

When will Season 2 air?
In a massive show of support, HBO picked up A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season in November 2025, two months before the first season premiered. The new episodes are expected to debut in early 2027, so you won’t have to wait multiple years between seasons, like has become custom with other premium TV shows.
Has shooting started yet?
Yes. Season 2 began filming in Belfast in December 2025 and continued into the new year. That partly explains why the cast and crew were not available to promote the show’s first season, which aired in January and February, to the extent in which they desired.

How did Season 1 end?
The last episode of Season 1, titled “The Morrow,” ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. Maekar initially wanted his son, Egg, to become Dunk’s permanent squire. But when Dunk, still recovering from the trial by seven, explained how they would be living on the road, sleeping in ditches, Maekar forebade Egg from joining him. Later, Dunk was setting off to leave Ashford for good, and Egg appeared and claimed his father had given him his blessing. Egg’s disobedience was confirmed when the audience checked in with Maekar, who was unable to find his youngest son anywhere.
What is the plot of Season 2?
Since Season 1 focused exclusively on the 1998 novella The Hedge Knight, the first in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series, expect Season 2 to adapt the plot of the second novella, 2003’s The Sworn Sword. The third and final novella, The Mystery Knight from 2010, will then undoubtedly serve as the basis for a future Season 3 — should HBO give it the green light.
In The Sworn Sword, which is set during a dangerous drought in the Reach, Dunk and Egg have been together for over a year and are serving a lord named Ser Eustace Osgrey. The elderly man is feuding with a powerful neighboring noblewoman, Lady Rohanne Webber, aka The Red Widow, over water rights. The theme involves what it means to be a sworn man in the hierarchical Seven Kingdoms.
