DEDHAM, Mass. — Southern New England, including Massachusetts, is getting hit by a powerful nor’easter that’s bringing heavy snow, unleashing blizzard conditions, and causing power outages.

Blizzard and winter storm warnings have been issued across the state. It’s the first blizzard warning locally since January 2022.

More than two feet of snow is possible in Boston and southward into Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut. Many other areas are in for at least a foot of snow.

By Monday morning, blizzard criteria were met in many communities, including Boston. New Bedford had 30 inches of snow on the ground, while TF Green Airport broke a record set in 1978.

Strong wind gusts, coupled with the heavy, wet snow, were causing widespread power outages, leaving hundreds of thousands in the dark.

Schools across the state have also announced closures.

right. Power outages and flooding are just two of the big concerns today for people along the coast, including along the Cape. Boston 25 News reporter Ellie Murillo live in Sandwich this morning with a look at conditions there. How are you doing, Ellie? Um, if I’m being honest, this is, I’m doing OK, but if you do not need to be outside, I would say please stay indoors. The wind, I think, is the most powerful part of this storm. You can hear it. I don’t know if you guys can hear it in the background here, but it’s really, really loud and those wind gusts are super high. But I actually want to show you the last time we were on air, we. Actually had a clear path here in the parking lot because we got to shovel a little bit. Now there’s extreme accumulation. Like it’s just every few minutes you see that snow piling up here. I think we’re going to have some crews kind of clear the parking lot in a couple of minutes, but we had a couple cars get stuck here, so we had to try and help them shovel out and kind of get back on the road, but It kind of shows you that clear picture of stay home if you do not need to be outside. Please do not come outside. And I know we were left with three words Ellie, get some gloves. I got some gloves because it is also very cold and with that wind can also come, you know, really, really cold fingers. But I want to show you actually, James, I’m going to have you pan down to my boots. Look how much accumulation. I’m not even down. Fully to the ground here. There is so much snow, you guys, that it’s almost like. Accumulating by the second, so you want to make sure you stay off the roads and stay safe. I’m going to send it back to you guys. I just said to Ray, I said, look at Ellie’s got some gloves. Jean said it, get some gloves, and she did it hands on the metal mic. It’s so cold. You gotta have gloves. All right. More than 12,000 customers are currently without power in Norfolk County. Boston 25 News reporter Bob Ward is in Franklin with a look at the conditions there, Bob. Well, it is just nasty out here as it is all across the state. I’m in Franklin. I am in my hometown, and the wind is just picking up now as you can see. We are right off the exit, old exit 16 now, exit 41 495, and I want to show you through all that all that snow. There’s a green sign over there on the right. To the left of it is the on-ramp to Route 495 north. You can barely see it, and you don’t want to go out on 495. You don’t want to go out on any highway. We tried to get on 495, it’s not plowed. And even if you could get out there, it’s going to be like this, you can’t see where you’re going. You can’t see the road. We’ve driven around town on these back roads, they’re trying to keep up the best they can, but you can’t see the road. Route 140, this is King Street right here behind me. Route 140 is a little ways away. We drove that through the center of town. It was wide open, but you couldn’t see the edges, so it’s just not worth it to be driving at all. I want to show you the snow bank. We’re in a position. There’s a Dunkin’ Donuts here. It’s closed, so it doesn’t do us much good other than the fact that they’re letting us be here, but they plowed this out for us and look at the snow bank here. It’s almost as tall as I am, and on the other side is the depth of snow that we have, and easily we have more than 1 ft of snow. I heard you guys talk about Foxborough at 19 inches of snow. We are just two towns away from Foxborough, north of Foxboro. This has been projected to be the general area, the jackpot area, and it definitely looks and feels like this is going to be a jackpot here. So again, Route 495, even on a good day, it can be very slippery. Even in a rainstorm, it can be slippery out there today. I’m just going to tell you it’s impassable. I imagine some emergency crews can get up and down I-495, but if you don’t have to get out there, definitely do not get out there. And if you don’t have to drive anywhere, these back roads, these side roads, they’re doing the best they can. The DPW here in Franklin is trying to keep up, but it is a chore, and they’re just doing the best they can. Honestly, if you’re inside watching us on television, you don’t have any place to go, just stay and watch us on Boston 25. You are winning today because this is one nasty storm, and I got to tell you guys, I have, uh, there was a crew out here shoveling. There was an older guy like me and I asked him, I said, what do you think, blizzard of ’78? I ask that every time we get a major storm like this. And the consensus is, you know what, let’s wait and see what happens. I’ll tell you, I remember the blizzard of ’78. I was a teenager, um, you know, we’ll see how this goes. The good news is there’s better equipment out on the roads. I’m not gonna say we’re gonna get paralyzed like we did back then, but this is a pretty nasty storm. Definitely, you know, take this one serious. It’s not, uh, it’s not a hit and run storm. We’re gonna be out here. All day, you know, kids nowadays, this is a lot of snow for them. This is their blizzard of ’78 for kids that are little and haven’t gone through this before. So it’s a memorable one for sure. And uh don’t bother going to that dunk’s drive-ins. Hopefully you get some coffee soon, Bob, and find a dunks that’s open. Well, Boston will not be spared from the heavy snow. This city is also dealing with the threat of coastal flooding. On top of that, Boston 25 news reporter Ryan Breslin is live in Boston this morning with how things are looking there. Ryan, it’s not looking good. Catherine, that’s right, we’re seeing very low visibility out here in Boston. I want to show you we’re at Center Plaza, so right across from me, behind me, is City Hall, which you can barely see because of the way that the snow is coming down and the wind is whipping. A few people are out here walking the sidewalks this morning and some people. Driving like that car in front of me right now, but there are also people out here trying to start this cleanup. You can see the gentleman across the street right now with the snow blower out. They have been consistently out there all morning since at least 5 o’clock. They have been going to keep that area of the building. And that sidewalk cleared this morning. We have a person come on over here. What are you doing out here walking this morning? Can we chat with you really quickly? Yes, I had an internet issue at home and I have so much work to do. I actually, I work at the Devo Technologies. On the second floor, and I came to actually work. So you decided because you couldn’t get on the internet, you actually had to come into the office when it could have been a good work from home day for you. Exactly, exactly. Tell me a little bit about what you’ve seen as you’ve been walking over here in terms of the conditions. They’re working. The state. I saw a bunch of shoveling cars working around and the streets are quite clean, so but it’s better to stay home, definitely. So how far away do you live and did you have to take the tea to get here by chance? I walked and then also I took it. I live at 7th Street near Kendall Square, a couple of blocks away from Kendall, so it’s walkable. OK, but you live in Cambridge then, and so taking the tea, any issues? What was it like taking the tea today in these conditions? No, no issues. It’s slow, but they’re not like. Crazy issues, but it’s definitely slow, slow, definitely. Well, thank you so much for chatting with us. Good luck at work today. Sorry that you had to trek through this in the snow. It’s beautiful. It is beautiful like she mentioned, it is beautiful to see, especially just look up. The snow is falling in all different directions because of the way that this wind is gusting here this morning. We will of course continue to monitor these conditions and monitor the people trekking out here this morning. For now we’re live in Boston, Ryan Breslin for your local station, Boston 25
