Six people were injured and 70 people were displaced Monday night after a massive fire ripped through a Morrisville apartment complex.
Authorities took one person to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill, but the nature of that person’s injuries is unknown.
Crews responded to the fire just after 6 p.m. at the Camden Westwood Apartments apartment complex. The fire was put out just after 10 p.m., according to firefighters.Â
Firefighters remained at the site early Tuesday putting out hot spots.Â
It is unclear what started the fire, but investigators were expected to be on site Tuesday morning.Â
Sky 5 captured video of a massive fire at the apartment complex on 2100 Summit Ridge Loop near the Park West Village shopping center.
‘Worst I’ve seen in a long time’
Several viewers sent videos showing flames shooting out of the roof of the complex. Morrisville Fire Chief Thomas Dooley Jr. and told WRAL News that this is the worst fire he’s seen in his time with the town’s fire department.
“I think this is one of the worst fires I’ve seen in a very long time,” said Donnell Nichols with the Red Cross. “This is definitely a large fire that we have not seen in a very, very long time.”
Zek Silva, general manager of Ruckus Pizza at Park West, said his restaurant donated food to several of the people affected by the fire.
“It’s heartbreaking what happened, but we donated a lot of food tonight [and] brought tons of jugs of water for them, pasta, pizzas,” Silva said. “Not only that, we’re going to set up a donation for them tomorrow.”
It is unclear what caused the fire. Dooley said firefighters are currently in recovery mode, but will shift to investigating with the arrival of the fire marshal and the hotspots are extinguished.
What we know about Camden Westwood Apartments
WRAL News reached out to Camden Property Trust – a publicly traded, real estate investment trust – which owns the property. WRAL News is waiting to hear back.
Monday’s fire is not the first at the Camden Westwood Apartments. In 2019, dozens of people were displaced after a fire at the complex, and in 2009, fire crews said a discarded cigarette led to a fire on the third floor that displaced a dozen people.
According to property records, Camden Westwood was built in 1998 and sits on 29 acres of land. The complex has about 350 total apartments, some of which include fireplaces. The complex has wood joists and aluminum vinyl siding.
The building also has a sprinkler system, and a town spokesperson said the sprinklers went off.
The town of Morrisville spokesperson said every resident in the building was displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is helping those displaced find places to stay.
“We’re finding out what people’s needs are, and then we’re going to transition into a more longer term operation,” Nichols said. “We never have an idea of how long that’s going to be. It’s really going to depend on the needs and what resources exist.”
