Planned to kill deer in Clarksville’s Origin Park paused after transparency concerns

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A planned effort to address the White Tail deer population at Origin Park in Clarksville has been put on pause.

The wildlife reduction plan was announced over the weekend and was set to start Monday and last through Friday. But now, that effort has been temporarily paused after the plan was met with scrutiny.

Clarksville Town Council members said claim to have been left in the dark about the planned culling.

Councilman Tony Munich says he found out about the operation happening in his own district on Sunday after a Facebook post by New Albany Officials.

“It’s unacceptable for something like this to be concealed from the elected officials in the area that this is happening,” Munich said.

Another councilman, Bob McEwen, shared the permit held by Origin Park to Facebook Monday.

It was approved on November 25 of last year and allows for the removal of up to 80 deer. The reason given in the document shows that the park believes the deer are causing or threatening to cause damage to the property.

Officials with the Origin Park, operated by River Heritage Conservancy (RHC), declined an on camera interview and referred WAVE to a statement.

Clarksville Town Manager Kevin Baity, who sits on the RHC Board, also referred WAVE to the statement.

In a statement from River Heritage Conservancy, officials said they made the decision to temporarily pause the reduction effort after speaking with the town manager. They also said representatives from the conservancy will meet with the council to “review the process and address any outstanding questions before proceeding.”

Munich says killing the deer is just one part of the problem. The lack of transparency is another.

“It’s an issue bigger than. Origin Park. Why were we left out? And it’s just a little bit shady,” Munich said.
