The Toronto Blue Jays and Max Scherzer are running it back.

The 41-year-old right-hander ended his free agency suspense Wednesday, according to multiple reports, agreeing to a one-year, $3 million contract to return to Toronto.

Scherzer made two starts for the Blue Jays in the World Series last year. Now he’ll get a chance to earn his first ring since 2023, when he helped the Texas Rangers win the first championship in the history of their franchise.

Scherzer went 5-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 17 regular season starts last season. He missed time with inflammation in his right thumb, but returned in time to help the Blue Jays clinch the American League pennant.

In the World Series, Scherzer made two starts as the Blue Jays lost a seven-game thriller to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Scherzer and the Jays maintained a “strong mutual interest” but needed time to hammer out the terms of a new deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, who was first to report the agreement Wednesday.

Toronto already had a strong rotation led by Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Trey Yesavage and free agent acquisition Dylan Cease.

Now, the Blue Jays will try again to send Scherzer out on top in what could be the final year of a Hall of Fame career.
