Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea’s Fiorentina have scraped through in the Europa Conference League.
A bad mistake from David de Gea contributed to Fiorentina losing 4-2 in the second leg of their tie against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok.
Despite the home defeat, which was 3-0 after 90 minutes, Fiorentina’s two goals injury time helped them to win 5-4 on aggregate and make the next round.

David de Gea started the game on the bench, which was not unusual in this competition. Fiorentina have rotated goalkeepers in the Europa Conference League in 2025/26, with Luca Lezzerini starting the game.
Lezzerini was substituted at half-time with Fiorentina 2-0 down. The change was attributed to a ‘muscle injury’, according to Italian outlet Viola News.
De Gea conceded a third goal in the second half and Fiorentina’s 3-0 lead from the first leg was wiped out in front of their home fans, forcing extra-time.
Fiorentina scored two goals in extra-time before De Gea conceded a soft shot from 25 yards out that slipped through his hands and into the net.
It was the type of mistake the Spaniard made occasionally during his final season at Manchester United.
Italian outlet TMW described De Gea’s error as ‘clumsy’, while noting that the error fortunately did not cost his team.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper helped Fiorentina reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals in 2024/25. They remain in this year’s competition, only just.
De Gea’s Fiorentina had had a tough campaign domestically, where they have recently climbed out of the Serie A relegation zone – but only on goal difference. There is still plenty of work to do.
He has made 26 starts in the league this season, and has recently been linked with a move to Juventus, despite being 35.
