If you’re dreaming of retirement already – and, to be honest, who isn’t? – you might want to set your sights on these Texas cities.
As Texas continues to experience soaring migration levels of new residents moving to the Lone Star State, so, too are their older residents looking to settle down to spend their golden years. Retirement Living published in late January its assessment of the best communities to retire in within Texas, and, surprisingly enough, the unofficial “Retirement Capital of Texas” didn’t top the list.
Retirement Living named the city of Wichita Falls its No. 1 location for retirees aiming to best utilize their savings, largely driven by the community’s affordability. The median rent in Wichita Falls clocked in at $1,185, per the report, as well as features the least cost-burden senior households in the U.S., at 16.3% compared to Texas’ average of 19%.
As for the unofficial Retirement Capital of Texas, that title has long belonged to the North Austin suburb of Georgetown, which has become a haven for older residents looking to settle down in recent years. Despite that recognition, Georgetown came in at No. 15 on Retirement Living’s assessment, with individual scores including an affordability ranked No. 19, safety levels at No. 2, livability metrics at No. 16 and healthcare access classified at No. 27.
As for the Texas capital itself, Austin ranked No. 24 out of 31 cities reviewed, with an overall score of 47.76%.
