Michael Keays arrived in Podgorica on February 27 to assume his duties as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., at the U.S. Embassy in Montenegro and officially began his tenure on March 2. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, he most recently served as a Senior Advisor on the U.S. Department of State’s Policy Planning Staff and will lead the U.S. Mission in Montenegro until a new Ambassador is appointed.
Under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the United States continues to prioritize partnerships with allies that share a commitment to freedom, security, and the rule of law. Upon his arrival, Chargé Keays reaffirmed the 120-year diplomatic partnership between the United States and Montenegro and underscored continued U.S. support for Montenegro’s sovereignty, security, and prosperity. He also emphasized the importance of close cooperation to strengthen defense and security institutions, combat transnational organized crime and corruption, and expand bilateral trade and investment in support of shared prosperity.
