Townsend Powers Through

World No.87 Townsend reached her first career final over the weekend in Austin, Texas. A few days later, and over 1,000 miles slightly northwest, Townsend continues to play like a woman on a mission. The 29-year-old angled past Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei in front of a boisterous crowd in Stadium 4, 6-4, 6-4. 

Townsend will face American wild card Akasha Urhobo for a spot in the main draw on Tuesday. 

Other winners on Day 2 of WTA qualifying include Priscilla Hon, who defeated No. 6-seeded Renata Zarazua 7-5, 7-6(3) and Storm Hunter, who got past Austrian Sinja Kraus, 7-6(4), 6-4.
