Silent Planet have added a new item to their webstore that left some fans confused.

The California progressive metalcore band are now offering branded Faraday cellphone bags through their merch store. Added with little fanfare, the item prompted some questions from fans unfamiliar with what it actually does.

For those unaware, a Faraday phone bag is a signal-blocking pouch designed to prevent incoming and outgoing wireless signals, including cellular, 5G, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, RFID and NFC.

Vocalist Garrett Russell gave the following explanation:

We put these on our web store last week, and we’ve received a lot of questions about what exactly they are. 

Well, I have a question for you then. Have you ever felt like your phone is reading your mind? Have you ever seen a bunch of ads for things that you’ve been wondering about, but you haven’t even researched them? How does your phone know that you’re thinking about them? Then you remember that you had a conversation last week with a friend about that exact thing. 

Well, your phone is listening to you at all times, and the government is building a profile on you using Palantier technology. It all feels really dystopian and creepy. If you’re like me and you’re tired of it, well, this is the thing for you. It’s called a Faraday bag. It’s pretty simple. You drop your phone in and voila, you are off the grid. Your phone is dead to the world. There’s a metal alloy in this bag that blocks all electromagnetic waves from getting in or out.
