NEW LONDON, Conn. —

The United States Coast Guard Academy men’s lacrosse team was was defeated by Connecticut College, 6-10, on Tuesday in the two teams’ annual match-up on the Mohegan Parkway. The Camels led by just one goal coming out of halftime before creating space with a 5-1 third quarter.

Coast Guard drops to 1-3 after being held to less than ten goals in back-to-back games, while Conn College improves to 2-0. The Camels will open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play in their next one on Saturday, March 7th, against Middlebury College (0-1).

Freshman attacker Liam Miller (Radnor, Pa.) scored twice for a team-leading two points, while four other bears contributed a point each. Evan Granahan (Aldie, Va.) rounded up five ground balls and was one of four bears with a caused turnover. Mason Tucker (Alpharetta, Ga.) went 10-for-19 on face-offs. Junior goalie Brett Tobasky (Brookline, Mass.) had 16 saves on the night.

Andrew Rainville led the game with four points on four goals, while Harrison Zmijewski tallied two points on two scores. Securing the game-high ground ball total was Liam Doherty with six, while Henry Dulmer and Liam Horkan caused two turnovers each. Camels net-minder Patrick Hogan made six saves on the night.

Coast Guard seemed overpowered on both ends, mustering 24 shots while allowing 43 from their hosts; Conn outshot the Bears, 27-8, in just the second and third quarters combined. The Camels were also the better team on the clears, going 19-for-23 while the Bears were 17-for-27, and took better care of the ball with 16 turnovers on the night to USCGA’s 24.

The Camels opened the scoring at 6:39, but Coast Guard responded with a pair of scores from Ezekiel Christian (Stonington, Conn.) and Patrick Smith (Leesburg, Va.) before the first quarter horn. Conn got both of them back while shutting out the Bears in the second quarter to take a 3-2 led into halftime, largely hindered from building a bigger lead thanks to 11 first half saves by Tobasky.

Conn added opened the second half with two more goals to extend their scoring run to 4-0, but Ben Nocerito (Severna Park, Md.) stopped the bleeding with a score at 6:51. The Camels popped the stitches by adding three more to take an 8-3 lead into the final quarter.

Coast Guard flipped the script to start the fourth by scoring three unanswered in the first five minutes to cut the deficit down to 6-8 with 11:08 to play behind Miller’s two goals and another from Max Silver (Jupiter, Fla.). However, the Camels regained control and allowed just two shots from the Bears the rest of the way while scoring two themselves to put it on ice.
