With the 2025-26 NBA season nearing its conclusion, the questions around Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s future with Golden State are becoming even more prominent.

Kerr is in the final year of a two-year, $35 million contract extension he signed in February 2024, currently leading a Warriors team that is the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference with a 31-30 record.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy addressed the uncertainty surrounding Kerr’s contract, emphasizing that the organization will wait until the end of the season to figure out the four-time champion head coach’s future.

“Yeah, I don’t see why not,” Dunleavy told Tim Kawakami on “The TK Show” when asked if he expects Kerr to return to Golden State next season. “I mean, I think Steve has mentioned wanting to get to the end of the season and figure it out. I think things are, for him, going well.

“You know, we’ll figure all that out when it comes, but I think it’s been interesting that the focus for us internally between myself, Joe [Lacob], the players, and Steve, has really been on how to get this thing right the rest of the season. So, we haven’t put a whole bunch of thought into it.”

“Obviously, on a personal level, I love having Steve here,” Dunleavy added. “Yeah, I would project that he’s our coach next year. But again, we’re going into absolute certainties, and a lot of it is in his court, so we’ve got to see.”

During this past offseason, Kerr explicitly stated that he is not worried about his expiring contract situation and will reassess his future once the season is over.

However, the one-time NBA Coach of the Year expressed interest in staying with the team beyond the 2025-26 season.

“I’m very comfortable just going into this season with a year left [on the deal],” Kerr told reporters during the first day of training camp. “I’m so aligned with [GM] Mike [Dunleavy] and [owner] Joe [Lacob]. There’s no reason for discussion [or] concern. This is kind of a point in our relationship where it’s like, let’s just see how it is at the end of the year.”

The Warriors have 21 games left in the regular season, with the likeliest scenario of having to fight for a playoff spot in the play-in tournament.

Regardless of the outcome for Golden State this season, it is certain that Kerr’s future with the team he won four NBA championships with will be determined sometime during the offseason.
