Recently, staff members at Kayo Boxing in West Hempstead, New York, entered their office and found it in shambles, with papers knocked off the desk and scattered across the floor.

The confused workers searched everywhere and soon found the culprit. An opossum had snuck in overnight, ransacked the place, and was now resting comfortably on a folder in the corner.

In need of an expert, the staff members called local animal rescuer Karenlynn Stracher.

Stracher was already busy with a different rescue, so she told them to hold tight, maintain a careful distance and keep the opossum safe until she could get there.

When she finally arrived, Stracher was pleased to find that the opossum was relaxed, seemingly unfazed by the gym’s activities continuing around him.

“He slept peacefully with classes going on,” Stracher told The Dodo.

Stracher named the opossum Champ. She carefully picked him up in a blanket and carried him through the gym, much to the shock and awe of the boxers practicing inside.

“The entire class split in half, parting like the Red Sea, so he and I could walk through,” Stracher said.

Staff members snapped a few photos of Stracher with the opossum before the rescuer headed out to release him. Everyone shared a laugh, feeling grateful that the confusing day had reached a happy conclusion.

“It was one of the most fun, funniest rescues I’ve ever done,” Stracher said.

Stracher took the opossum to a nearby park and gently settled him in the grass. Then she watched him return to his home in the wild.

“[He] ran off happily,” she said.
