Kauai Coffee extends layoff warning as lease talks continue

  • March 8, 2026

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Kauai Coffee Company has extended its notice of potential layoffs to employees.

About 140 employees who could potentially be laid off were told of the extension on Thursday, Kauai Coffee said.

Under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, employers are required to notify employees of potential mass layoffs or closures.

The company initially filed the notice to the state in January because its lease with landowner Brue Baukol Capital Partners was set to expire at the end of this month.

However, the company said it has no plans to close and is continuing to negotiate over more than 3,000 acres owned by the Colorado investment firm.

General manager Brian Kubicki said that while they cannot provide a formal update due to ongoing negotiations, WARN notices will be extended monthly as conversations continue beyond the current lease’s end date.

Kauai Coffee said that in the meantime, the farm and its coffee shop remain open in Kalaheo.
