Worldwide Caution – Enroll in STEP
In line with the America First Global Health Strategy, the United States Government, through its multimillion dollar STRIDES (STRengthening Infectious disease DEtection Systems) project, concluded today a five-day Training of Trainers in Biosafety and Biosecurity to help reduce the risk of disease outbreaks spreading within Madagascar and beyond its borders, including monkeypox. The newly certified 30 Malagasy professionals will strengthen laboratory safety standards across Madagascar, sharing their technical expertise and teaching skills to train thousands of laboratory personnel nationwide in implementing Madagascar’s National Standard Operating Procedure for Biosafety and Biosecurity.
“The United States’ STRIDES project does more to strengthen Madagascar’s ability to detect, diagnose, and respond to all infectious disease threats than any other foreign assistance program in Madagascar.” said Steve Bremner, U.S. Embassy Acting Deputy Chief of Mission.
Mr. Steve Bremner added “Strong laboratory systems in Madagascar protect both Malagasy and American families. Disease outbreaks respect no borders. When Madagascar can rapidly detect and contain health threats, we all become safer.”
This investment builds Madagascar’s self-reliance and trained local professionals can independently operate laboratories to international standards and reduced reliance on external technical assistance.
The training, using standardized training materials adapted to Madagascar’s context, focused on practical laboratory safety demonstrations, including how to strengthen laboratories to meet international safety standards for handling dangerous pathogens, slowing or stopping the spread of dangerous and deadly diseases.
A biosecurity team from implementing American company Black & Veatch, contracted under STRIDES, provided the training, in collaboration with Madagascar’s Laboratoire d’Analyses Médicales Malagasy (LA2M) national biosecurity laboratory.
