An extensive water main break in Uptown sent over two feet of water pouring into streets early Monday morning and lowered water pressure for swaths of residents, according to New Orleans city officials.

The large break at South Carrollton and Panola Street is the second major disruption in two weeks after a large outage along South Claiborne flooded the area, dropping water pressures and forcing schools to close for days. It is also the second incident along Panola Street this year, after a 48-inch break in January caused a sinkhole.

City officials asked residents to avoid areas bound by South Carrollton Avenue, Burdette Street, South Claiborne Avenue and Hickory Street because of the active public safety incident.

No boil water advisories had been issued as of 4 a.m. Sewerage and Water Board officials said they are aware of the incident and are sending out crews to investigate.

Photos and videos posted to social media showed residents waking up to flooded cars.

BREAKING NEWS – another massive water main break in NOLA. Multiple people’s homes and cars are flooding. Avoid the Carrollton area on the river side of S. Claiborne. I would not drink the water coming out of your faucets if you live around New Orleans and have low water pressure. pic.twitter.com/oh2EbYDyeO
