Matthew Cohen, president and CEO of the Long Island Association (LIA), is stepping down from the Long Island Association.
“After 15 impactful years with the Long Island Association working alongside our vibrant and proactive business community, I have decided to finish my term which was ending in June and explore new opportunities,” Cohen said in a statement.
“It has been an honor to help advance Long Island’s economic growth, support our hardworking small businesses, and create meaningful connections for business leaders across the region,” Cohen said. “I am grateful for the LIA members, colleagues, partners, and friends who have made this journey so rewarding.”
Cohen served as president and CEO since May 2021 after previously serving as vice president of government affairs and communications. During his tenure, the LIA strengthened advocacy at the federal, state and local levels to support the region’s economic competitiveness and long-term prosperity.
Under his leadership, the organization expanded small-business programs through the LIA Foundation and continued hosting networking and policy forums featuring nationally and globally recognized speakers.
During his tenure, he grew the board to include more women and minority owned business leaders. He also expanded partnerships with Optimum, Meta, Amazon and more. He enhanced advocacy on the East End, holding regular business forums. And he fostered new relationships with small business and young business leaders.
“On behalf of the Long Island Association Board of Directors, we thank Matt for his years of leadership and commitment to our organization and to Long Island,” LIA Board Chair Larry Waldman said in statement. “We are grateful for everything he has accomplished and look forward to following his continued success.”
The LIA will soon begin a search for its next president and CEO. During the transition, Stacey Sikes, the LIA’s vice president for government affairs and communications, will serve as acting president and CEO.
