With the release of their fourth studio album, 1975’s One of These Nights, Eagles notched a number of firsts: their first No. 1 album, their first to yield three top ten singles, and their first Grammy Award. One of those singles also went to No. 1. When all was said and done, One of These Nights sold four million copies and transformed the band into international superstars – even though it proved to be the swansong for original member Bernie Leadon. On May 1, Rhino will revisit One of These Nights in a variety of formats including 3CD/Blu-ray, 3LP, and digitally.
One of These Nights was recorded with producer Bill Szymczyk at Miami’s Criteria Studios and Los Angeles’ Record Plant, with three of its songs composed solely by the prolific team of Don Henley and Glenn Frey (the title track, “Lyin’ Eyes,” and “After the Thrill Is Gone”). Henley and Frey were joined by Randy Meisner to write “Take It to the Limit” and by Bernie Leadon and his brother Tom Leadon for “Hollywood Waltz.” The original album was rounded out with compositions by Henley and Felder (“Visions,” Felder’s only lead vocal on an Eagles album), Meisner and Felder (“Too Many Hands”), Bernie Leadon (“Journey of the Sorcerer”), and Leadon and his then-partner Patti Davis (“I Wish You Peace”).
“One of These Nights” became the group’s second single to top the U.S. Pop chart, following the previous album’s “Best of My Love.” The next 45 off One of These Nights, “Lyin’ Eyes,” did almost as well, reaching No. 2. The album’s third single, “Take It to the Limit,” hit No. 4 and became the band’s biggest single to that point in the U.K., where it hit No. 12. While the banjo instrumental “Journey of the Sorcerer” and MOR-oriented “I Wish You Peace” have been considered outliers on the LP – the former ended up as the theme to the BBC’s Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy adaptations while the latter’s inclusion led to friction within the band – One of These Nights reflected the band’s transition from country-rock to mainstream pop-rock. It stayed at No. 1 for four weeks in the U.S. and became the first of the band’s four consecutive chart-topping albums.
The expanded One of These Nights, produced by Don Henley, introduces a new mix of the 1975 album by Rob Jacobs. It follows the format of Rhino’s 2017 box of Hotel California, adding a live concert as the bonus material. The box premieres the band’s previously unreleased show of September 28, 1975 near the end of the album’s tour at the Sunshine Festival in Anaheim, California – not far from Disneyland, where the future Eagles once supported Linda Ronstadt onstage. In addition to hits from the band’s first three albums (including “Take It Easy,” “Best of My Love,” and “Witchy Woman”), the set includes rarities such as “Blackberry Blossom” and the encore of Chuck Berry’s “Carol.” Future Eagle Joe Walsh joins the group for the encore and a performance of his “Rocky Mountain Way” (still a staple of Eagles setlists today).
The Blu-ray Audio disc included in the 3CD/1BD set features stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes of both the remixed album and the Anaheim show. The 3LP version, with lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, contains both the remix and the concert in full.
