Emmy and Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive) is the newest actor to join the cast of FX‘s The Lowdown for Season 2. Jones is the second casting of the season so far, following Betty Gilpin, whom we announced exclusively this month.

From creator Sterlin Harjo, the first season of The Lowdown follows the gritty exploits of citizen journalist Lee Raybon (Ethan Hawke), a self-proclaimed Tulsa “truthstorian” whose obsession with the truth is always getting him into trouble. While Lee’s no idealist, he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk.

In Season 1, the publication of Lee’s latest exposé – a deep dive into the powerful Washberg family – is immediately followed by the suspicious suicide of Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), and Lee knows he’s stumbled onto something big. Following a trail of breadcrumbs Dale has left behind, urging someone to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding his death, Lee does just that.

The show’s freshman season also starred Keith David and featured guest stars Kyle MacLachlan, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Michael “Killer Mike” Render, Kaniehtiio Horn, Tracy Letts, Peter Dinklage and the late Graham Greene.

The acclaimed Western noir series was renewed for a second season in January, with production set to take place in Tulsa, OK, this spring. The series’ first season was recognized by the AFI Awards as one of the 10 most outstanding TV programs of 2025 and is among the year’s most acclaimed series.

The Lowdown is created by Harjo, who executive produces with Garrett Basch, Hawke, Ryan Hawke, Duffy Boudreau and Scott Teems. In Season 1, Harjo also wrote and directed various episodes. The Lowdown is produced by FX Productions, with all episodes currently available to stream on Hulu.

Jones is mainly a big-screen star, though he has had notable TV roles. His second small-screen role was in the long-running soap One Life to Live, which he followed with credits on Barnaby Jones, Baretta and Charlie’s Angels. In 1983, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his portrayal of Gary Gilmore in The Executioner’s Song, and in 1989, he was nominated for an Emmy for Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for Lonesome Dove. He last appeared on TV in HBO telefilm The Sunset Limited, working opposite Sam Jackson in 2011. Jones also directed the movie. In a series, he last starred in Lonesome Dove 37 years ago.

Jones is represented by CAA and Jacobson Russell Saltz.
