One of the Seattle Mariners’ players in the World Baseball Classic is reportedly heading back to the team’s spring training camp in Arizona regardless of if his team advances.
Utility player Miles Mastrobuoni injured a calf muscle while with Team Italy in the WBC and will return to the M’s following the team’s final game of pool play, according to USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

Italy, which also features Mariners outfielder Dominic Canzone, plays Mexico in Houston on Wednesday night in a game that will decide which of Italy, Mexico and the USA advances to the WBC quarterfinals.
The 30-year-old Mastrobuoni appeared in three games for Italy during the international competition, going 2 for 3 with an RBI double and a walk. It was his second time playing for Team Italy in the WBC, having previously done so in 2023.
Mastrobuoni played 76 games for the Mariners in 2025, hitting .250 with a .324 on-base percentage, .620 OPS, four doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. He previously played eight games with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022 and 111 games for the Chicago Cubs between 2023-24.
Mastrobuoni, who also played 31 games for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in 2025, saw time at all positions for the Mariners last year except for catcher, shortstop and center field. That includes a scoreless inning as a pitcher.
The Mariners have 15 days until they open the season on Thursday, March 26 against the Cleveland Guardians.’
