It doesn’t matter if it’s a top-flight NFL quarterback, Kevin Durant or a three-time major champion golfer. Somehow, some way, Kay Adams is going to get her interview subject to speak on something controversial.

Among Wednesday’s interview subjects on the Up and Adams show, which was live at TPC Sawgrass, was Jordan Spieth, the aforementioned three-time major champ. As for the controversial subject discussed, that was the “anchoring” debate, which was reignited last Sunday at Bay Hill when Akshay Bhatia, who uses a broomstick putter that the top of looks suspiciously close to his chest, hooped everything in an incredible comeback win over Daniel Berger. And by “reignited” I mean a bunch of people on Twitter were claiming Bhatia was cheating.

Adams, who admittedly knew little about anchoring and what it means, asked Spieth what she needed to know. “Should putters be shorter? Should long putters be a thing? Do y’all care?” she said. Spieth, who sheepishly smiled at the camera, educated her on the matter, then offered up an interesting take.

“In the rules, you can’t anchor,” he said. “Anchoring is if that putter was touching his sternum, up top. Or, you can arm-bar now, but you can’t anchor it against your torso.”

Adams followed up, asking Spieth, who is on the PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council, if broomstick putters should be allowed at all.

“There’s a skill to it, and if it were that easy to do, and made everyone that much better, everyone would do it,” he said. “I would like the putter to be the shortest club in your bag because it is the shortest club in my bag and I do believe that it forces more skill. It takes—it uses your hands more, which makes you have to be more athletic. But at the same time, I could easily go [use a broomstick] if I thought it was going to make me better.”
