After Aaron Pierre makes his DC Studios debut as Green Lantern John Stewart in HBO’s “Lanterns,” he’ll meet Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming sequel “Man of Tomorrow.”
“Superman” stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will both return as the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor, respectively, for “Man of Tomorrow,” which is set for release on July 9, 2027. German actor Lars Eidinger joins the cast to play the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac. “Man of Tomorrow,” written and directed by DC Studios co-chief Gunn, is due to begin production this summer in Atlanta.
In “Lanterns,” Pierre stars as John Stewart, a new recruit to the Lantern Corps, opposite Emmy winner Kyle Chandler as Lantern legend Hal Jordan. Per the show’s logline, the series follows “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” A trailer for the HBO series was released earlier this month, teasing the buddy-cop dynamic between Hal and John as the elder Green Lantern shows the newbie the ropes. “Lanterns,” which launches in August, marks Pierre’s true superhero debut after he previously appeared in the DC series “Krypton,” in the role of Dev-Em.
Pierre’s filmography also includes the hit Netflix film “Rebel Ridge,” portraying Malcolm X in the Nat Geo series “Genius: MLK/X” and starring in Barry Jenkins’ limited series “The Underground Railroad” for Prime Video, as well as voicing Mufasa in Jenkins’ “The Lion King” prequel. Pierre most recently voiced a key role in “Goat,” from Sony Pictures Animation. He is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, B-Side Management and Narrative.
THR first reported Pierre’s crossover role. DC Studios had no comment.
