Two legendary coaches, two completely different playbooks. That’s what 2026 five-star forward Olivia Vukosa is discovering as LSU and South Carolina battle for her commitment. The 6-foot-4 Croatian center has become one of the most coveted recruits in women’s college basketball, and her recent comments reveal how Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley couldn’t be more different in their approach to landing top talent.
How Do Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley’s Recruiting Styles Compare?
Vukosa’s recruitment journey has exposed the contrasting communication styles between two of the sport’s most successful coaches. The differences start with frequency and intensity.
When describing her interactions with LSU’s coaching staff, Vukosa reveals a more frequent, intensive approach.
“I talk to Coach [Gary] Redus about once a week and then Coach [Kim] Mulkey every other week, usually. Same thing, they’re all rushing at me,” Vukosa shared with a laugh.
The Tigers take Vukosa’s recruitment very seriously, maintaining regular contact throughout the process. Gary Redus, widely known as Kim Mulkey’s “secret weapon” on the recruiting trail, is the main person working on developing a bond with the star recruit.
This intensive contact between the coaching staff and recruits is typical of LSU’s recruitment style, which aligns with Mulkey’s approach of building a championship-quality team by aggressively pursuing top players.
Meanwhile, Vukosa’s conversations with South Carolina present a completely different dynamic.
“I talk to Coach [Dawn] Staley here and there,” Vukosa explained. “She likes the same thing, phone calls are a bit shorter, but it’s good. We talk a lot about shopping and designer stuff.”
This approach highlights Staley’s ability to connect with recruits personally, moving beyond basketball to discuss shared interests and lifestyle topics.
The varied frequency and communication style reflect both coaches’ personalities and the culture of their programs. Mulkey’s communication appears to be more basketball-centric and intense, while Staley has chosen to keep conversations shorter and more personal, building genuine connections with players off the court.
What Makes This Recruitment Battle So Compelling?
Vukosa has narrowed her options to seven schools: LSU, South Carolina, UConn, Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Ohio State. The No. 4-ranked prospect in the 2026 class has scheduled her official visits for the fall.

Both programs bring impressive credentials to the table. LSU recently won the 2023 national championship under Mulkey and has established the No. 1 recruiting class for 2025. South Carolina has owned the head-to-head rivalry between the programs, with 17 straight wins against LSU. Staley’s program has incredible depth, with 10 McDonald’s All-Americans on its roster during the 2024-25 season.
As Vukosa prepares to take her official visits this fall, the differences in recruiting approach between Staley and Mulkey will continue to play a role in her decision-making process.
Whether she responds better to LSU’s intensive, frequent communication or South Carolina’s more personal, lifestyle-focused conversations could determine where one of the nation’s top recruits takes her talents.
