Elena Rybakina is guaranteed to become the new World No. 2 after the tournament, but will the reigning Australian Open champion celebrate a career-high ranking with a run to the Indian Wells final when she faces the in-form Elina Svitolina in the semifinal?
WTA Indian Wells Semifinal Predictions
Aryna Sabalenka vs Linda Noskova
Head-to-head: Sabalenka 1-0 Noskova
Aryna Sabalenka’s near-perfect start to the season continued with a gutsy 7-6 6-4 win over Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko. In their second meeting in as many months, Sabalenka was tested and had to save all five break points she faced in the match to pick up her 15th victory in 16 matches this season. The only stain to what has been a very excellent start to 2026 was that Australian Open final defeat to Rybakina. The Belarusian remains in the hunt for a first Indian Wells, having come close the past three years (runner-up in 2023 and 2025).
Noskova’s presence in the semifinal is hardly surprising. The Czech’s talent has never been in doubt and she didn’t make much noise reaching the Indian Wells semifinals for the first time. The highest-ranked player she faced in her path was World No. 32 Alexandra Eala, whom she beat convincingly. She then fended off Australian qualifier Talia Gibson in the quarters. This will be Noskova’s second career WTA 1000 semifinal. Sabalenka has operated a step ahead of the tour for quite some time. Noskova can only match her pace for stretches. Expect Sabalenka’s weight of shot to come out on top.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Elena Rybakina vs Elina Svitolina
Head-to-head: Rybakina 3-3 Svitolina
Svitolina earned a precious win over Iga Swiatek. It was her 19th of the season, which is more than anyone else on the WTA Tour. The Ukrainian had a poor track record in that matchup, having lost five of their six meetings. But a blistering start to the match, in which she powered through the first set 6-2, set the tone for a deserving three-set victory. Svitolina will contest her first semifinal in the desert since 2019.
Rybakina, meanwhile, was the last player to punch her semifinal ticket. Just like at the Australian Open, the in-form Kazakh downed Jessica Pegula in straight sets with an accomplished serving performance. She improves to 15-3 for the season and is chasing her second title of the season after winning the year’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne. She will become the new World No. 2 next week.
It’s a fascinating matchup with the head-to-head evenly poised at 3-3. Svitolina has every reason to feel confident. She’s won a tour-leading 19 matches this season and beat Rybakina in their only hard-court meeting five years ago. That said, Rybakina continues to dictate with her flat ground game, and that clean power should help her break through Svitolina’s defense.
Prediction: Rybakina in 3
