Last season did not unfold the way Russell Wilson had hoped. After signing with the New York Giants, Wilson started just three games before ultimately being replaced by rookie Jaxson Dart. Now, the veteran quarterback is searching for a new opportunity, and one potential landing spot could come as a surprise.

After going 0–3 as a starter during his brief stint in New York before being benched, Wilson will not be returning to the Giants. As he heads into free agency, the longtime veteran will be looking for another team willing to bring him in.

While there are not many teams that appear likely to sign Wilson as a full-time starting quarterback this season, he could still find himself in an interesting role with a team looking for a reliable backup or a short-term starter early in the year.

Because of that, Greg Auman of Fox Sports offered a rather intriguing prediction about where Wilson could land: the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Wilson, 37, has fallen hard over the last three years, going from a $40 million starter in Denver to barely playing on a bad Giants team. He went 0-3 as a New York starter, and after making $10 million this past season, he might draw half that. His best scenario is likely a bridge starter who goes to a team with a young starter so they don’t have to rush him. Go back to 2024, he had 16 touchdowns against five interceptions while going 6-5 for the Steelers, and that’s the hope for a team that brings him in as a stopgap,” Auman wrote in a post for Fox Sports.

Obviously, the Chiefs do not need a long-term starter with Patrick Mahomes leading the offense. However, there is still uncertainty about when Mahomes might return after suffering a torn ACL in December.

If Mahomes is not ready to begin the season or misses time during the preseason, Wilson could provide valuable insurance as a veteran presence capable of stepping in if needed as the team prepares for the 2026 campaign.

Additionally, the Chiefs now have a clear need for a dependable backup quarterback after losing veteran Gardner Minshew to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. Wilson could help fill that vacancy while giving Kansas City a steady and experienced option behind Mahomes.

Needless to say, the idea that Wilson could be heading to Kansas City led to a lot of reactions from fans.

“KC doesnt have a veteran back up. Gardner Minshew signed a one year for 5.7 million with the Panthers. KC may offer 4-5 million for one year with Wilson. Since Mahones has an acl tear and not sure he be ready when season starts,” one fan wrote in the comments on NewsBreak.

“Don’t think we need Russell Wilson here in KC. Nothing personal against Russ,” someone else commented.

“Remember one thing – if you get in the right place you can win a super bowl – just ask Sam DARNOLD,” another fan added.

“He’s washed up. He hasn’t done anything of note since he left Seattle. Time for him to retire,” someone else said.

“Honestly this wouldn’t be a bad move for the Chifes,” another fan added.

It remains to be seen whether this scenario ultimately becomes reality, but on paper, it would make plenty of sense for both sides.
