Malta will begin offering free EpiPens to patients at risk of severe allergic reactions under a new government health measure.

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela announced that around 1,600 patients — including 480 children and 1,120 adults — will benefit from the scheme, with an annual investment of approximately €352,000.

The initiative will provide adrenaline auto-injectors used to treat anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition where rapid intervention is critical.

Patients eligible for the scheme will be assessed by government clinical consultants based on previous episodes of anaphylaxis. Once approved, the medication will be distributed through the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme.

Adult patients will receive two injectors per year, while paediatric patients will be given two at once.

Abela said the measure aims to reduce financial pressure on families who previously had to purchase the medication themselves, while improving patient safety.

“This is a measure that can truly make the difference between life and death,” he said, adding that the government remains focused on prevention and patient wellbeing.
