REDDING, Calif. — California’s second-in-command at the state Department of Public Health visited Shasta County on Tuesday to tour the local public health operation and meet with local leaders involved in a proposed medical school for the Northstate.

Rita Nguyen also met with elected officials and stakeholders for lunch to discuss the proposed medical school for Northern California. She said she was impressed by the work already underway.

“It was really wonderful to hear how well thought out, how collaborative this effort has been for many years to explore the concept of a new medical school for the Northern California region,” Nguyen said. “It really is trying to meet a need around inadequate access to healthcare providers and the unique healthcare needs of rural north. And so, it was really wonderful to get to meet some of the leaders who have been working on this.”

Nguyen said state public health typically is not directly involved with medical education, but she plans to connect the group with the appropriate state department focused on “healthcare access and information.”
