Kelsey Plum is venturing into a new space: AI.
The WNBA star has enthralled fans en route to winning two championships and establishing herself as one of the league’s biggest stars. Because of her profile, it could be difficult to meet with all the fans, which is why Plum teamed up with AI communications company Talk2Me to create an AI version of herself.
In a video she posted on her personal Instagram page, Plum introduced a “twin,” which gives fans the opportunity to interact and have conversations with. Her newest update comes after she and Caitlin Clark turned heads with their approach to the media.

“The opportunity to have a twin that can connect with fans, with young people, people that love basketball, people that are just interested in sports. The range is endless,” Plum said in a statement, according to Fast Company. She then added a warning, stating: “It’s where we are in society, and I think you are either gonna get with it or get lost.”
The 31-year-old also claimed that having an AI version of herself allows fans to interact with her who might not have had the opportunity to do so when they attend her games. What’s more, Plum believes that having an AI twin allows fans to have a more intimate conversation with her.
“In the arena, I can only talk to so many people, so many fans at one time, and so I think the next best thing would then be to log on and have a one-on-one conversation,” the WNBA star continued.

“I think it’s just a great opportunity to reach more people and obviously, too, we’re gonna be able to see what people are asking and wanna see, and we’ll be able to grow from there.” And while Plum claims her newest venture will be a positive for fans, her supporters on social media had a markedly different tone.
“i’m a new phantom fan and this is so disappointing! your authenticity and talent is what makes you a fantastic player,” a fan wrote in response. “AI can’t replicate that. the message you’re sending to young fans is that their personhood can be replaced by a machine. it’s a dangerous message! don’t do it kelsey!”
Another added: “Not sure what to say here. You’re an amazing player and athlete. You don’t need a twin. The fans like you for who YOU are and what you do. AI ain’t it. Saying things like “you either get with it or get lost” is terrible and not truthful in any way. You’re amazing please do better.”

A bevy of fans also stated that while they loved what Plum did on the court, they did not appreciate her dabbling into AI, considering the impact it has on the environment and society as a whole.
“girl we love you, not the ai twin,” a fan wrote with a second adding: “Kels you’re my absolute fav but this is a big no.”
In the end, the star believes that the opportunity will be one that would beneficial for the fans and outweigh any pitfalls.
“I just think it gives a way . . . to connect, and that’s a cool thing. Obviously, we use basketball . . . but I think using a twin in and outside of a basketball lane is something that will be special for people,” she concluded.
