Scottie Scheffler started his 2026 PGA Tour season with a win at the American Express and followed that up with top-five finishes at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
His consistency in the first three tournaments of the year waned over the past three tournaments with a T-12 at the Genesis Invitational, T-24 at the Arnold Palmer Invitation and T-22 at the Players. PGA Tour analyst Johnson Wagner suggested Scheffler’s recent struggles come down to his decision to chase distance.
Wagner even predicted Scheffler would skip the Valspar Championship this weekend before playing in the Texas Children’s Houston Open next week – and that’s exactly his plan.

On Friday, the PGA Tour announced the field for the Texas Children’s Houston Open and revealed the No. 1 player in the world would be competing.
“The Texas Children’s Houston Open is the 12th event of the 2026 PGA TOUR Season and is being hosted at Memorial Park Golf Course for the sixth consecutive time. Â The field features World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Min Woo Lee,” the PGA Tour’s communications department announced.
Wagner hinted Scheffler’s recent struggles would come to an abrupt end in Houston.
“He’s flip-flopping back with the driver, is he going to play the new one? Is he going to play the old one? And I think Scottie is going to take obviously Valspar off, come back out in Houston and he’s going to be a different guy. He’s going to be the guy that we have seen for the last few years,” he said.
Scheffler won the Masters in 2024 with a four-shot advantage over Ludvig Aberg before finishing solo fourth in 2025, three shots behind winner Rory McIlroy.
