OnePlus could give up on the premium segment in India.
According to yet another leak, OnePlus could be set to close its doors in several markets around the globe. Business is expected to continue as usual back home in China, but the company could exit both the US and European markets in short order.
At the start of the year, rumors surfaced claiming OnePlus was set to close shop in several markets, thanks to waning sales and a significant overlap with the Oppo brand. While those rumors eventually died off after a rebuttal of sorts by the company, they seem to be back in full force.
According to leaker Yogesh Brar, OnePlus is set to close its businesses—or, at least, scale back operations—across multiple markets. The leaker doesn’t exactly provide a list of affected markets but claims this to be bad news for US, UK, and EU customers, potentially indicating that those markets will be directly impacted.
Interestingly, the source claims OnePlus’s Chinese arm will be entirely unaffected, while its Indian business will focus on budget and mid-range products. Both of those points are consistent with prior rumors, and lend credence to the earlier denial of shutdown reports by Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India.
It’s worth noting, of course, that none of this information is confirmed. There is, as colloquially claimed, “no smoke without fire”, though; it’s likely OnePlus indeed has significant changes planned for its business across the globe. Recent moves like the confirmed global release of the Oppo Find X9 Ultra support that idea as well, with Oppo likely setting up the framework to take OnePlus’s place globally—in the flagship segment, at least.
