UNC-Chapel Hill fires men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis following team’s first-round loss in NCAA Tournament

All right guys, welcome to downtown Greenville. It’s absolutely gorgeous here on this Friday. Probably don’t even need my hoodie. You can see behind me they’re setting up right there for some fan fest thing. Also had *** great meal. I’ve had nothing but good meals since I’ve been here. One of those meals coming up right now. That was lunch, *** beet salad with some shrimp. It is Lent Friday, so no meat allowed for this guy here. Now, Duke practices around 3 o’clock today. But I really want to take some time to talk about North Carolina basketball and kind of where this program is at this point, because it kind of feels like last night was an inflection point or this program kind of hit the crossroads of where they are. If you think about yesterday’s loss, that 19-point lead and give VCU some credit, they never gave up. Those guys played hard the entire game. That 19-point lead that they had that they saw slip away, really has some questions or brings fans to having some questions about where does Carolina go from here. Now, *** couple of nuggets from it. It’s the first time in over 50 years that Carolina basketball has lost the last 3 games of the season to end their season. It’s kind of *** big deal. That 19-point lead that they had, that they saw slip away, was the largest lead that they’ve had slip away and end up in *** loss in about 15 years if I have that stat correct. Here’s the other thing you got to think about. It was just *** couple of years ago that Carolina missed the tournament. After making it to the tournament in LA, they, you know, they made the trip out there. They didn’t get past the Sweet 16. Last year they played in the 1st 4, lost in the 1st round. Yesterday, losing to VCU in the first round, and again, the way it happened kind of leaves *** bad taste in *** lot of fans’ mouth, and that’s understandable. Where does the program go from here? That’s the big question. We asked the players in the locker room if they thought Hubert Davis had done *** nice job as the head coach, if he should be back. Henry Vissar said, hey, look, Hubert gave him an opportunity and provide him an avenue that he hadn’t had before. He loved Hubert, loves Hubert. Thanks Hubert. Did tremendous things for him. Seth Trimble said Hubert gave him an opportunity. He’s been his coach for 4 years, you know, he said, yeah, while Hubert might not be perfect, none of us are perfect either. Seth’s perspective is he gave him *** chance and opportunity, and he loved every minute of it. But the question remains now with all the turnover amongst the administration at Carolina, new athletic director coming in. New system of change. Are they gonna want to bring in *** new coach? Does Carolina basketball have The wherewithal to withstand all of this mounting pressure from the fan base and let’s be clear. The pressure is rightfully so. It’s North Carolina basketball. It’s one of the premier basketball programs in the entire country. Just making the NCAA tournament is not the standard here. It’s just, it just isn’t. But where do they go? That’s the big question. I don’t have *** particular answer for you. I can see both sides. I can see moving on. I can see, hey, maybe we need to invest more in basketball to make sure Huper can put *** proper roster together and Carolina is more successful than we’ve seen. I think *** lot of these questions are going to be answered over the next couple of days and the next couple of weeks is where Carolina goes, but right now it’s *** disappointed basketball team. They didn’t speak much in the locker room. They said it so. They said Hubert didn’t speak much in the locker room after the loss. The guys basically said we’re going to talk later on. I don’t know where they go. I do not. I will say this, I didn’t love Hubert in the press conference. I thought he was combative. There were questions that needed to be answered as to why things went wrong. But it’s his own prerogative. We’ll see where Carolina goes, but as for the rest of the day, we’ll see where Duke goes. Great win for them to come from behind. John Shire and those Blue Devils continue to win those battle-tested games and come back when they need to come back. They continue to find ways in tough situations to get *** win. So we’ll see what practice is like. We’ll talk to the guys in the locker room, Chanel Porter and myself, and we’ll see. How this goes. More coverage coming up throughout the rest of the week as we get ready for the 2nd round on Saturday where Duke will take to the floor, looking to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16.
