EXCLUSIVE: Documentary+, the nonfiction content streaming platform available around the world, has acquired global rights to culinary-themed Still Single.
The documentary about “sushi superstar” Masaki Saito, owner of the namesake Michelin two-starred restaurant in Toronto, will premiere on Documentary+ on April 23 as a Documentary+ Original. Jamal Burger and Jukan Tateisi directed the feature, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, accompanied by a pop-up 60-foot outdoor omakase sushi bar on King Street, the festival’s main drag.
“Trained in Japan since childhood and lured to Toronto from New York City, this 36-year-old culinary visionary has redefined high-end Omakase dining with his unique approach: he ages his fish right to the brink of freshness, embodying the same daring spirit in both his cuisine and lifestyle,” notes a description of the documentary. “Still Single offers an in-depth look into the Japanese master’s world, capturing the artistry of his kitchen, his humble roots in rural Japan and his current tumultuous daily routine.”

As Deadline reported earlier this month, Documentary+ was recently acquired by acTVe, the streaming television and FAST channel operator based in West Hollywood.
“Still Single is exactly the kind of film we want to champion at Documentary+,” CEO Geoff Clark said in a statement. “It’s beautifully crafted, emotionally honest, and wildly entertaining from start to finish. We’re thrilled to give it a home on Doc+, where audiences around the world can discover and fall in love with it as much as we did.”

Still Single marks the feature directorial debut of Burger and Tateisi. Burger is a Toronto-based filmmaker and photographer “whose work is grounded in a philosophy of fostering connection through shared vulnerability.”
“I love what Doc+ stands for,” Burger commented, “and I look forward to seeing the film we brought to life on the same platform as so many other incredible stories. Sharing my first feature as a co-director in an accessible way means the world to me.”

The acquisition deal was negotiated by Documentary+’s Geoff Clark, and by Nate Bolotin from XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers. Producers of Still Single are Fraser Ash and Kevin Krikst for Rhombus Media (Blackberry, The Sympathizer), and Julian Nieva for Common Good, with Niv Fichman of Rhombus executive producing.
Documentary+ is available in more than 100 million U.S. homes and worldwide in more than 70 countries. “Known for its curated, filmmaker-first approach, the platform offers audiences access to a wide range of compelling nonfiction storytelling from around the world.”
Still Single joins a wide array of titles on the platform including The Power of Pickleball, Oscar-shortlisted A Swim Lesson, Oh Yeah, Mississippi River Styx, When the LAPD Blows Up Your Neighborhood, among hundreds of others.
