Warning: This article includes spoilers from the Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premiere

Following the Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premiere, Charlie Cox opened up about what the shocking cliffhanger means for Matt Murdock and Bullseye’s dynamics going forward.

Bullseye has appeared in both the Netflix and Disney+ versions of Daredevil. After killing Foggy Nelson at the start of Born Again, Bullseye continues his rampage under the eye of Wilson Fisk. The season 2 premiere saw the antagonist make an unexpected move when he saved Murdock by killing the Anti-Vigilante Task Force agents who had unmasked the fan-favorite hero.

Murdock now has “really complicated” feelings about Bullseye, according to Cox, who told EW that the character played by Wilson Bethel will “go down a path that is so unexpected” this season.

Murdock has had to grapple with losing Foggy, of course. But just because his own life was saved by Bullseye, it doesn’t mean there can be forgiveness between the two now.

Throughout Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Fisk will, naturally, act in a very confrontational manner toward Murdock and “what he represents.”

The mayor is working as hard as he can to make Murdock’s life as miserable while also making it “much harder for Matt to out-and-out loathe him and hate him.” As a result, “very unexpected revelations” will be revealed about these characters.

“It’s a really complicated relationship. Wilson’s character this season is very confronting to Matt, who he is and what he represents and what he seems to be trying to do makes it much, much harder for Matt to out-and-out loathe him and hate him. That’s a real testament to [showrunner] Dario [Scardapane] and the writers for making the Bullseye character go down a path that is so unexpected. And it leads to some very, I think, interesting conversations and very unexpected revelations about both of those people.”

Aside from those revelations, which Cox refused to divulge so as not to spoil the season, the brand-new set of episodes being released over the next several weeks will show his character undergoing an internal evolution.

He starts off the season being “unsure about himself” and relying on Karen Page to make all the decisions, while he simply executes the plans. By the end of the season, though, Murdock will be at a place where he knows exactly “what I have to do and now I’m gonna do it.”

“He’s so unsure about himself, so he relies on Karen Page. She makes the decisions, she calls the shots, she’s running the show, and he just executes. He’s almost having to hand over the reins because he doesn’t trust in his ability to make good decisions in that department anymore. It was fun to do that knowing we’re gonna get to a place where he’s like, ‘I know what I have to do and now I’m gonna do it.'”

It’s possible that Murdock’s confidence at the end of the season will allow him to one-up Fisk and Bullseye, and prevent the villains from continuing their reign of terror, though the latter’s unexpected decision at the end of the premiere complicates everything, like Cox indicated.

Outside of Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, Bethel is best known for shows like The Young and the Restless, Hart of Dixie, The Astronaut Wives Club and All Rise, while Cox’s credits include Boardwalk Empire and Adults. The latter also played Murdock/Daredevil on The Defenders, Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Echo and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Margarita Levieva, Matthew Lillard, Tony Dalton, Michael Gandolfini, Clark Johnson, Ayelet Zurer and Krysten Ritter (in a highly-anticipated reprisal of Jessica Jones) are among the cast members starring on Daredevil: Born Again this season.

After the Born Again finale is released on May 5, Jon Bernthal, who once had his own Marvel show on Netflix, will return to the MCU in a special on May 12 called The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 streams Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+.
