The collegiate men’s hockey championship began Thursday, and as the Rangers continue to audition young players for the future at the NHL level, four Blueshirts draft picks will also be participating in the postseason tournament.

EJ Emery, their first-round pick in 2024, continued blossoming as a defenseman for North Dakota during his second collegiate season and helped it secure a No. 2 seed — collecting three goals and 12 points after finishing with just one assist as a freshman. Malcolm Spencer, the Rangers’ second-round pick in 2025, collected 10 goals and 23 points across 37 games for Michigan during his freshman season, helping the Wolverines secure the No. 1 seed. His power-play goal in the second period of the Big Ten title game tied the match at 3-3 before Michigan ripped off four unanswered goals in the final frame to take control.

Forward Ty Henricks (sixth-round pick in 2023) and defenseman Sean Barnhill (third-round pick in 2025) both earned spots in the 16-team field with Western Michigan and Michigan State, respectively. After scoring the game-winning goal for the Broncos in the national championship last year, Henricks’ second collegiate season has featured nine goals and 25 points. The towering 6-foot-6 Barnhill — who was initially supposed to spend one more season in the USHL until a Michigan State injury ahead of the season opened up a chance, according to the team’s website — helped the Spartans earn the No. 3 seed as a regular piece of their blue line.

North Dakota opened with a game against Merrimack on Thursday night, while Michigan State began with a 2-1 victory against Connecticut in the first round. Michigan will face Bentley in its first-round game Friday. Western Michigan will also face Minnesota State on Friday.
